Welcome to Craven County

Established in 1712, Craven County is now home to approximately 103,000 residents. Many newcomers and visitors are attracted to Craven County due to its moderate climate, scenic location, historic and recreational attractions and wealth of services. Craven County is a brilliant example of the "old" co-existing peacefully with the "new". Our history is distinguished. Our present and future are shaped by innovation, and driven by new technologies.

For newcomers, Craven County offers an abundance of housing options, located in eight municipalities, numerous subdivisions and other unincorporated areas within the County's 712 square miles. An expanding and developing workforce, a diverse population, availability of numerous professional services and easy access to major transportation arteries are attractive features for businesses seeking development, expansion and relocation opportunities.

County Manager Jack Veit

Jack B. Veit, III was appointed to Craven County's top administrative post as County Manager on October 1, 2011, after serving as Assistant County Manager since May 2010. As Craven County Manager, he is responsible for a $161M general fund budget, ~800 budgeted positions, and ensuring the provision of a wide array of services provided by 31 departments for over 102,000 Craven County residents.

Veit came to Craven County after serving five years in Carteret County as Assistant to the County Manager, then Assistant County Manager. A native of Pfafftown near Winston-Salem, he is the son of retired teachers Jack B. Veit, Jr. and Kathryn Veit. He graduated from North Forsyth High School and Appalachian State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science with a concentration in Town, City and County Management and a master's degree in Public Administration with a focus on Local Government Administration. Veit was awarded the Matt Williamson Local Government Scholarship in his final year of Graduate School.

As Craven County Manager, Veit led Craven County through numerous hurricanes to include Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence, as well as natural disasters such as the Great Lakes Fire and the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, Craven County constructed a water treatment plant, a new judicial center, a new transportation facility, the Opioid Epidemic Response program, and implemented the first new enterprise resource planning system Craven County had implemented in 20 years.

Jack and his wife, Meghann, reside in the unincorporated area of Craven County with their two children.
