Craven County Inaugural Citizens’ Academy Class Graduates

Craven Connection Citizens Academy Inagural Class 2019

Craven County launched Craven Connection, a free Citizens Academy, on October 1, 2019 in an effort to promote citizen engagement through education on the mechanics of county government in North Carolina.  The inaugural class had 13 participants from across Craven County who met in five sessions from October 1 to November 4, 2019 to receive information from each of the County’s departments.

The class members visited the Coastal Carolina Airport, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension office, the Craven County Judicial Center, the Craven County Clerk of Court and the Emergency Operations Center. In addition, they met individually with selected departments to gain more in depth information about how departments work to serve the citizens of Craven County.

One program highlight was a mock board of commissioners’ meeting during which seven of the class participants were selected to serve as commissioners.  The mock board of commissioners was given the opportunity to tackle real issues facing Craven County.

Members of the inaugural Craven Connection class include: Elijah Brown, Furney Brown, Gary Curry, Myra Flowers, Donald Frye, Steven Hall, James Heath, Donald Lathan, Susan Long, Teresa Mitchell, Roger Pait, Valerie Perry and Dorothea White.

Graduation was held at the November 4, 2019 Craven County Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting.
