Craven County to Open Additional Emergency Shelter

Craven County Emergency Management will open an additional Emergency Shelter at Trent Park Elementary School located at 2500 Educational Drive in New Bern at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 13, 2018.  Pets are not accepted at the Trent Park Elementary School Emergency Shelter.

The Benn Quinn Elementary School Emergency Shelter operated by Craven County is at capacity and is no longer able to accept additional residents or pets.

The following Craven County Emergency Shelters still have availability for citizens living in low lying areas prone to flooding with nowhere else to relocate but these shelters are to be used as a last resort.

1. Havelock High School (101 Webb Blvd, Havelock)

2. Brinson Elementary   (319 Neuse Forest Ave, New Bern)

3. Farm Life Elementary   (2000 Farm Life Ave, Vanceboro)

4. Trent Park Elementary (2500 Educational Drive, New Bern)

A mandatory evacuation order was issued for all of Craven County effective 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 and all residents are strongly encouraged to evacuate outside of Craven County. An emergency shelter outside of Craven County has been identified for Craven County evacuees who have nowhere else to evacuate to and is still accepting residents.  The shelter is located at the Sanford Army National Guard Facility, 2214 Nash Street, Sanford, NC  27331.  A mega shelter has also been opened at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial (LJVM) Coliseum
2825 University Pkwy, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.  Transportation to shelters is no longer being provided.

Citizens should bring their own pillows, blankets, medication, hygiene items, special foods, baby formula (if needed) and any other special needs items.  There may be times that the shelters are without the ability to support medical devices and equipment so portable charging devices are recommended. Citizens are prohibited from bringing weapons, alcohol, illegal drugs, perishable food items, radios or televisions into an emergency shelter.  Small hand-held devices can be used with headphones.
